Duvet or Comforter - Which One Best Suits Your Needs?

Duvet or Comforter - Which One Best Suits Your Needs?
  • Quilt, blanket, duvet cover, or comforter...There are so many different types of bed coverings that it's hard to remember the differences among them;
  • In case you cannot choose between duvet and comforter - here you'll find everything you need to know about the two of them: the design, function, and material;
  • In the article below, you will also get to know the main differences between the duvet and comforter, and hopefully, it will help you decide which one best suits your needs.

Duvets and comforters have the same purpose - to keep you warm when it's cold and cool you down when it's hot. They are both made of a large piece of fabric filled with different materials.

In order to find out which one - the duvet or comforter is your go-to - it's important to look at different aspects of them and see which one better suits your needs.

What is a Comforter?

A comforter is a fluffy and thick blanket filled with synthetic materials that actually keep your body warm. It can be filled using the following materials:

  • Cotton;
  • Polyester;
  • or Down;

Unlike duvets, comforters are thinner and have less fill. Comforters are also usually quilted so that the filling of it would be distributed evenly and stay secured. Unlike duvets, comforters are designed to be placed on top of your sheets providing a layered look. That's exactly why comforters form only one piece of all your bed linens.

From the design perspective, you do not necessarily need to cover a comforter as it usually has its own finished look. Typically, a flat sheet is the one used to protect the bedding and your body.

On the other hand, if you want to keep your comforter clean for a longer time, you can definitely consider getting a duvet cover.

Oftentimes, comforters are sold in bedding sets, with additional pillows that make decorating easy. Usually, the pillows are of the same style as the comforter, thereby making your bed look beautiful and neat.

Finally, it is really easy to take care of your comforter as it can be washed in the washing machine along with your other bedding.

What is Duvet?

Duvet is a French word meaning 'down', which explains the actual meaning of it - down is the traditional filling for a duvet. Duvet is like a soft flat bag full of wool, feathers, down, or a similar synthetic alternative.

Duvet sets have originated in Europe and are mostly referred to as comforters in the United States (no surprise it's so confusing to separate them). To give them a fluffy feel, most duvets down fillings are made with fiber clusters and down feathers.

Unlike comforters, duvets are used as a single covering without the hefty combination of blankets, sheets, and quilts, among other beddings. That makes it much easier to make the bed and change the look of it.

Additionally, this bedding features a protective removable cover that’s usually made of cotton or a cotton-poly blend.

What is a Duvet Cover?

This is a soft and flat casing or bag that slips over the comforter or duvet, and you can relate it to a pillowcase. Duvet covers are usually open on one end where they feature buttons or a zipper for closure. Additionally, most duvet covers feature interior ties that are sewn in to hold the duvet or comforter in place and prevent it from slipping around.

Similar to other beddings, duvet covers also come in different materials. You can mix and match duvet covers with different pillowcases, or buy them together in sets, in the same style.

Duvet covers will keep both your duvet and comforter clean and more durable. However, if a comforter can be used without a duvet cover, it is very rare that a duvet would be used without it. That's perhaps the main difference between a duvet and a comforter.

Duvet or Comforter – So, which one is the Best?

Duvets are warm and very lightweight. Thanks to the duvet covers, you don’t need to wash them regularly. Duvets are also fluffier and make the entire bed-making process easy to handle as they are mostly used as one top piece of bedding.

On the other hand, most comforters are flat. Thus, you may need to layer them with other bedding during cold seasons. Since comforters usually require layering - it's also not as easy to make the bed as it is having a duvet. Also, as comforters come in a finished look and do not require protective covers - they are more likely to become dirty so you’ll need to clean comforters much more frequently.

So, duvet or comforter - which one to choose? Our advice - analyze your preferences carefully and choose the bedding following them. The best way to choose between duvets and comforters is to find something that suits both your home and lifestyle.
