How Often Should You Change Your Bedding?

Proper hygiene is crucial in all areas of life, especially for our bedding. Dirty sheets can lead to allergies, skin breakouts, asthma, and more, affecting both health and sleep quality. After thorough research and reviewing numerous articles, we've concluded the optimal frequency for changing your bedding to best support your well-being. Let’s dive in!

"We spend 56 hours per week in our sheets—that’s a lot of time,” says sleep educator Terry Cralle, RN. In the spring and summer, heat and humidity create the perfect environment for dust mites to thrive, so it's important to wash and change your bedding regularly. Different bedding items have different cleaning schedules, so be sure to follow the recommendations:

Pillowcases: At least once a week. For those with particularly oily skin or prone to acne, changing pillowcases every few days is advisable. Additionally, pay attention to the pillowcase material, it’s better to use natural fabrics like linen, cotton, or bamboo.

Duvet Covers: Every one to two weeks, depending on the material. Linen can be washed less frequently than other materials due to its antibacterial properties, but regular washing still helps maintain a clean and healthy sleeping environment.

Flat or Fitted Sheets: Most experts recommend washing bed sheets at least once a week. This frequency helps to remove sweat, oils, skin cells, and other debris that accumulate more quickly in the heat, providing a less hospitable environment for dust mites and bacteria, which thrive in warm and humid conditions.

PRO Tips from MagicLinen:

  • Don’t make your bed as soon as you wake up. Consider this your excuse to leave the bed unmade for a little while each morning. Give sweaty sheets a chance to dry by not pulling up your comforter immediately. “This will reduce the moisture that dust mites and bacteria need to flourish,” says Dr. Vij.

  • Keep pets off your bedding. Pets can bring extra dirt and bacteria into your bed, so try to avoid letting them sleep on your sheets.

  • Avoid eating in bed. Even if you're careful, small pieces of food can hide in your sheets, inviting unwanted pests and bacteria.

  • Clean your bedding set correctly. You can find all relevant information about linen care here.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure a cleaner, healthier sleeping and  well-being environment.
