How to Hang the Curtains?

  • Curtains are among the most important elements of the interior design - both aesthetically and functionally;
  • However, curtains can equally upgrade an overall interior design and mess it up, therefore it’s important to choose them carefully;
  • It’s not that difficult to hang the curtains right if you know how to do it. Below you’ll find some super effective tips and tricks that will help you within the process.

Changing the curtains may not be a significant change in your room, but it can actually do many tricks: create a more spacious look, change the direction and the amount of light coming from the window, and even help manage the noise coming from the outside. Even more, it’s proven scientifically that curtains can contribute to the quality of your sleep, meaning that simply changing your curtains can improve your sleep quality significantly. Amazing, right?

Before you hang the curtains, obviously, you should decide what they are gonna look like: cozy, airy, and bright? Or maybe a dark and gloomy one? After you finally come up with an idea, there are some easy tips you should know on how to hang your curtains properly.

Measure Carefully

Before you go to the textile shop ordering your curtains, you should do some serious homework. The very first step is to measure your window properly.

There are three most popular ways for your curtains to hang:

  • sill - this way the length of the curtains will be around 1 inch away from the windowsill;
  • full - this way the length of the curtains will be 1 inch away from the ground;
  • puddle - this way, your curtains will be extended 1-3 inches on the floor.

How to Measure the Window?

  • If you have a curtain rod already installed, start measuring from around 2 inches above it. It’s always better to get too long curtains than too short.
  • If you don’t have a curtain rod, then simply measure from the top of the ceiling to the bottom (or where you want your curtains to end), and add 1-2 inches to that.
TIP: Curtains look the best if they cover the whole window. Especially if your room is small. In that case, hanging the wider and longer curtains will extend the size of the window and will create an illusion of a spacious room. Anyway, in cases when the desk or some other furniture is standing by the window - it’s better to go for short curtains (sill type).

After the length is measured, don’t forget to check the width.

  • If your curtain rod is already installed, simply measure the length of it and add extra 2-3 inches. This way your curtains will overlap nicely.
  • If your curtain rod is not yet installed, measure the width of the window adding an additional 4-5 inches on both sides of the window.

Choose the Type of Curtains

Now that all the boring part of measuring is done, it’s time to express your imagination. So, what type of curtains will enhance the interior of your room best? We recommend you to think it through step by step.

The fabric of the Curtains

There are tons of different fabrics and materials for curtains - synthetic and natural ones, lightweight and thick ones, bright and dark ones...you name it! If you’re looking for more summer-ish, lightweight curtains - the linen ones are a top choice. Not only are they natural and high-quality, but they also look unique. People love linen curtains because they are easy to take care of and they look naturally gorgeous. Our shoppers especially love white linen curtains!

On the other hand, if you are looking for curtains that would create a more cozy and darker atmosphere in the room, as well as block the daylight more - you should definitely consider the heavier and thicker fabrics.

If you want to use both day and night curtains, you should remember that for the day curtains - lightweight, transparent, airy fabrics are more suitable, and for the night curtains - denser, darker, and thicker ones.

There is another way that may help you choose the fabric of the curtains - pay attention to what side your windows are located. In this case, for North-facing windows specialists recommend lightweight and transparent curtains (to not block the daylight), and for the South-facing windows - choose the thicker, so-called “blackout” fabrics ( to help you manage the surplus of sunlight).

Color of the Curtains

Choosing the right color of your curtains is no less important than choosing the fabric. Most of the time, the color and pattern of the curtains are chosen depending on the dominating colors of the interior design. Anyway, it’s your room, after all, therefore you are creating the rules! However, if you want our opinion - go for the curtains with the nature motifs pattern as it’s on TOP right now.

Size of the Curtains

As you probably already know - more fabric is always better than less. Especially when talking about curtains. You don’t want the curtains that cover only the part of your window or the exact frame of your window - it looks messy and not OK, believe me. Instead, remember one simple rule - the thinner the fabric - the more of it you need it for the curtains to fold nicely. So, very thin fabric curtains should be 3 or 4 times wider than a curtain rod, while thicker fabric curtains - 1.5 or 2 times.

TIP: Iron the curtains before hanging them - curled up curtains will look really clumsy.

Choosing the Curtain Rod

The most important ways to hang the curtains are curtain rod and ceiling-mounted rails.

There are many types of curtain rods: magnetic, spring, tension, traverse rods. The ones that are made of plastic, metal, or aluminum. They can also be mounted on the ceiling or on the wall. Besides, they can be single or double. Well, you get the idea.

As the number of different types of curtain rods is endless, we honestly think that this technical side of hanging the curtains would be the best to discuss with the professional.

How to Hang the Curtains

Congratulations! You're almost there! Once everything is ready, it’s time to hang the curtains.

Steps to Hang the Curtains Properly:

  1. Mark the spots on the ceiling or wall (depending on what curtain rod you have chosen) where the brackets will go. Don’t forget, brackets should be installed about 4-6 inches above the window frame and 3-6 inches outside the frame on both sides of the window. By the way, if the curtain rod is longer than 5 feet, it would be a good idea to install one extra bracket in the middle.
  2. Follow the instructions and complete the installation of the curtain rod.
  3. The final and most pleasant step - hang those curtains!
